It’s always fun to find new pictures of Caroline Ferriday, the American woman who brought the Polish “rabbits” to the U.S. after the war and one of the main characters in my novel Lilac Girls. I’d seen the announcement of her acting debut, but this is a new picture. (Caroline changed the spelling of her name later in life.) Love how they call her a society girl in the caption.
Caroline debuted in 1921 with E.H. Sothern and Julia Marlowe, the most famous Shakespearian actors of their time and good friends of Caroline and her Mother Eliza.
Since Julia Marlowe was such a famous actress, there is no shortage of her pictures to be found. I just discovered the postcard of her country home Highmount and the photo of her below at the house. Can’t wait to go up to the Catskills and find the house this summer, since it features prominently in book two.

This is another new Caroline find, in a newspaper article on actresses and their dolls. Love that she spent the first $40 she earned from the stage on her lovely doll.

In 1998, I spent Christmas with my girlfriend at the time, and her – get ready! – cousin’s Polish relatives, at a bed and breakfast that occupied this building and two other lodges on the property! The business was called “Wildacres” Inn, and it featured an outdoor pool, and spacious common areas(den with fireplace, dining room) inside the main structure. Which, by the way, was SOME “COTTAGE” – the place was huge, to me anyway 20 years ago.
I am aware of some major resort development in that area, that unfortunately was approved by government despite strong protests from residents in the greater Highmount/Shandaken area, and am concerned if this home, which should if not already, be on the Historic Places register, will be kept standing. Please advise as to current status of the Marlowe cottage. Thank you! :)
Wow! How lucky you were to stay there. It is such a cool place. I noticed the lodge out back but never knew anyone that stayed there…When the inn was operating, could you use the house? I think the people who want to develop the property want to restore the house, but I’m not sure. I think in its day it was quite a showplace for Julia Marlowe.
