How a vintage charm bracelet helped a Lilac Girls character come to life

I’ve collected charm bracelets since I was in middle school and have never seen this one. I knew right away Eliza Ferriday, Caroline’s mother would wear it in Lost Roses. In the prequel to Lilac Girls, Eliza is one of the three main characters and she loves to travel. Her peripatetic nature came in part from this bracelet I found at my favorite weekly antique show held at the Grange Hall in West Tisbury on Martha’s Vineyard.

I love the mechanical charms–the little pyramid opens and the cobra hovers in his basket. It’s the perfect piece to help me make Eliza and her love of travel come alive. Once I imagined it on her wrist, whole scenes opened up.

It’s great fun sending characters to Paris and Egypt, since I get to go too, of course.
