I started collecting Rockefeller Center ephemera when I began writing Lilac Girls since one of the book’s main characters works in the center’s French Building. There’s something about the look and feel of old paper from that era that evokes the period and helps set the scene.
But just when I thought I’d seen all the Rockefeller Center pamphlets and advertising out there, “Howdy Mr. Ice” shows up at my door. Thought I’d share it since Mondays are always better with a little humor. Plus, maybe “the largest ice stage in the world” will help us cool off in these last hot days of summer.

Clearly the world’s greatest show, “Howdy Mr. Ice” was not only produced by the wonderful Sonja Henie, but also featured the trio of talented skaters below.

Rockefeller Center has always been a happening place and continues to be so today. Too bad America’s only ice theater is no more. Could use it on this 90 degree day, but just the thought of Little Freddie Trenkler is cooling me off.
