One of the best parts of writing a novel is going back in time to learn about different events and periods. My book Lilac Girls opens during the 1939 New York World’s Fair so it was fun doing that research. The robots were especially interesting.

The 1939 New York World’s Fair, held at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park was the second largest American world’s fair of all time. Countries around the world participated (Germany was the only world power that did not) and over 44 million people attended.

Betty Broadbent, the Tattooed Lady, was certainly ahead of her time. She had over 500 tattoos and participated in a beauty pageant at the 1939 World’s Fair.
