When we looked at our new beach house in the dead of winter, we had no idea such beautiful lilacs would be waiting for us come spring. It seems fitting that they would be the first flowers to emerge here. Lilacs are a huge part of my new novel Lilac Girls since they were a favorite of Caroline Ferriday’s, one of the three main characters in the book. My two adolescent lilac plants pale in comparison to the gorgeous specimens at Caroline’s Bethlehem, Connecticut house and gardens, but they certainly make our little place feel like home.
