I’ve been collecting magazines of the WWII era since I started researching Lilac Girls back in 2000 and found some new copies of Frauen Warte, just in time for them to help inform The Golden Doves story. Frauen Warte was the Nazi Party’s biweekly magazine for women, which ran from 1935 to 1945. Each issue of Frauen Warte (translated as Women Wait) featured articles laden with propaganda designed to persuade readers to accept Hitler’s vision for Germany.
Mixed in with the propaganda, the magazine provided knitting patterns, recipes and fashion. It shows how important it was to Goebbels and Hitler to keep German women on their side. The covers alone (below) give a good idea of what the intended message was. I’ve included a sampling of magazine pages featuring fashions and other editorials below the covers.
